With starting number 722, Stirling Moss added a glorious chapter to the iconic status of the Silver Arrows in 1955. In a still unsurpassed record time, he piloted his open-top Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR to victory in the Mille Miglia, the race over the famous 1000 miles from Brescia to Rome and back. Set by Sir Stirling Moss and his co-driver Denis Jenkinson, the course record of 10 hours, 7 minutes and 48 seconds at an average speed of almost 157.62 km/h is unbettered to this day and will remain so for all eternity.

This legend made a return to the road in the form of the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster 722 S. In an even more powerful and sportier variant, the SLR Roadster 722 S, production of which was limited to 150 units, followed in the footsteps of its predecessors – a breathtaking, majestic super sports car in its original form.

Design

The SLR's pioneering design underwent some significant modifications with the SLR Roadster 722 S. No compromise was brooked in terms of maximum dynamics and sheer power delivery – based on the 722 Edition. Thus, the prominent front-end air splitter additionally increased the downforce to ensure stable road holding and precise handling at high speeds.

Black-painted air outlets on the bonnet of the SLR Roadster 722 S and palladium grey headlamp bezels added to the sporty effect of the carbon fibre look, while the darkened tail lamps brought things to an impressive conclusion at the rear. The interplay with the paintwork in crystal antimony grey was entirely consistent with the tradition of the Silver Arrows.

Technology

Technology transfer from the world of Formula 1 makes the SLR Roadster 722 S one of the safest roadsters in its class. The carbon fibre monocoque with its specially strengthened A-pillar affords maximum safety to the occupants while ensuring the necessary stiffness for excellent driving dynamics. The ideal counterpoint to the vehicle's supreme acceleration is set by the high-performance braking system at the front with visible red six-piston aluminium fixed-calliper brakes, which act on 390 mm carbon fibre ceramic discs.

At the rear of the SLR Roadster 722 S, the aerodynamics package of diffuser and airbrake ensures perfect driving stability even in critical situations. Carbon fibre wheel spoilers make for reduced air turbulence under the vehicle while adding further touches of refinement to the aerodynamic look.

Dynamics

At the heart of the SLR Roadster 722 S is an AMG V8 5.5-litre supercharged engine that delivers 478 kW/650 hp to propel the car forwards without compromise. This power package is kept safely under control by numerous innovations that not only add to the looks, but which make themselves felt especially at the wheel. These include the hand-sewn, precision-fitted soft top on the SLR Roadster 722 S: the integral composite panel prevents ballooning at high speeds while reducing the wind noise to a minimum.

Optimal aerodynamics, safety and ride comfort, also with the top open, are ensured by the 10-centimetre-high draught-stop and the carbon fibre monocoque with specially strengthened A-pillar. Power and sportiness are in perfect harmony in the SLR Roadster 722 S.

Specification

With its progressive elegance and exclusive choice of materials, the SLR Roadster 722 S impresses when it comes to its interior appointments package. Key items of equipment with regard to vehicle operation are refined with high-grade types of leather: semi-aniline leather, Alcantara or high-grip, moisture-absorbent suede.

Deliberate prominence is given to the seams in 300 SL red, "722" embossing on the head restraints and similarly red seat belts.
